Agreement #1: Honesty is the Best Policy
When you’re honest, life gets easier because you don't have to remember all the stories you tell the world, and yourself.
Honesty is the best policy. Honesty doesn't have to remember anything. Honesty is hidden when people are afraid they will be alone — so they choose dishonesty. Dishonest people will find they are alone. Honesty will always leave you with only those who are honest as well.
Being honest is easier said than done. That’s because when we choose to speak and act with integrity, all the false identities disappear. This is frightening because some people are so entrenched in false identities that they think they will die if they abide by the truth. Or that they will no longer be accepted by society. On one level this is true. Abiding by truth can be a dangerous endeavor — but it’s worth it. It’s worth it because dishonesty only perpetuates the suffering we experience. People want to feel good, and they want that feeling to last. Honesty will ignite growing pains; but make it through, and you will know lasting peace.
Truth is Like a Flaming Sword
It burns bright and hot and cuts through falsehoods and illusions. It’s ok if you’re afraid. Fear is just an opportunity to bring courage into your life. The courage to be honest with yourself.
