Is it OK to get paid for writing about God and Spirituality?
Drumroll… It depends.
Jesus and Buddha were basically homeless — traveling teachers freely sharing their wisdom to those who wanted to listen and saw value in the teaching. We don’t hear stories of Jesus saying, “The kingdom of Heaven is available to you… for $5/month.” Or Buddha saying something like, “I will teach you the Eight-Fold Path… for $100/hour.”
Oof. Aren’t we taught to give freely because we have been given to freely?
Hello. My name is Sebastian Calmes and I love writing about God and Spirituality — it’s my favorite thing to write and talk about. Is it OK to get paid for writing about God and Spirituality? Here’s where I landed on this question:
We must first talk about intention. If my intention is to make money by writing about God, then I must ask, “why do I want to make this money?” The answer reveals if my intention is egoic or non-egoic. If I want to make the money to use it as ‘fuel’ to serve another non-egoic purpose, then it’s a two-for-one. I get to spread the good news about God and I get money (fuel) to serve God in another way.
Money is fuel. It’s an energy — a resource. Money is not inherently bad. Money can be used for both egoic and non-egoic functions.
