Signs of an authentic spirituality
The quickest and simplest way to tell is looking at actions. If people are doing actions that mirror values like care, love, respect, integrity, and excellence, then theyâre probably an awakened person (there are other values too).
If someone sounds spiritually enlightened based on what they say but do actions that arenât in alignment with the values above, then theyâre a hypocrite and definitely not spiritually enlightened. Unless theyâre at the highest realization which is beyond ârightâ and âwrongâ action (which is another topic).
The most important thing to remember though is that it doesnât matter what people say or do, but what you do.
You could have a spiritual fraud who teaches valuable things but doesnât do them. Think about religious leaders that teach from Jesus but do bad things like⌠rape kids. Those actions donât mean that âlove your neighbor like yourselfâ is wrong. It just means that theyâre not practicing what they preach.
You can still practice what they preach, but just make sure you actually practice it.
Sometimes people argue about whether or no Jesus was real. In a spiritually pragmatic way, it doesnât matter if he was real or not. What matters is that the ideas that make Jesus Jesus are real â and we can find those ideas valuable or not. If you find those ideas valuable, practice them. If you donât, then donât.
This same concept can be applied to the east like with Ram in the Ramayana. Iâm sure some Christians would say, âOh, Ram is no real. It was just a myth. Jesus existing is historical truth.â Again, it doesnât matter who was physically alive or not. What matters is the ideas and values those spiritual characters represent.
If you can be as selfless as Jesus, or as dharmic as Ram, then those figures 100% exist. You made them exist for yourself and for the world that sees you behaving in these inspirational ways.
