What specific meditation techniques have proven most effective for quieting the mind and experiencing the state of “existence-consciousness-bliss”?
One day I was doing editing for a podcast. I was listening back to the recording while watching the waveform of the audio go by. Whenever there’s an audio signal, there are waveforms to represent them on the audio editing software.
At one point in the recording there was a space where it was quiet. There were no waveforms and it was a flat line. If you’d like an illustration of this, use your voice memos app in the iPhone (or some other recording app on your phone). Hit record, but be silent. You’ll notice there’s no waveform. Now say something or make a noise. You’ll notice a waveform is produced.
In this moment while podcast editing, something about consciousness clicked with me. It’s always listening/watching. At the point in the recording where there was no audio signal, I realized that, actually, there is audio signal, it’s just the signal of absence. The microphone is always listening in the same way consciousness is always listening/watching. Even if what it’s listening/watching is silence/absence.
This connection led to a meditation practice that I call, “I bear witness for you, Lord.”
